Hey guys! Sorry to dump my burden on you, but I really need help! I want to become a country singer and I even one to try out for AI when I turn 16. I love to sing and my friends say I'm good (They may be lying!). There is only one small problem! I'm afraid to sing infront of an audience. I want to, and once i'm on the stage, I have fun! But I worry about it so much! Lets just say I'm not very popular at my school and I'm definatly NOT pretty! I'm what they call a nerd! I love music and no sports! What do I do? I have a talent show tomorrow, where I sing alone. I'm really excited! I think this might help me become a better performer! Does anyone have any tips or suggestions? HELP!!!!!

Thanks!
Crissy

Sing sing sing every chance you get. That is the only way to get over the stage fright. The more you do it the easier it will get. It doens't mean the butterflys will ever go away, but it will get easier.

Before trying out for AI sing in front of tons of people. Sing every opportunity you get. Join a church choir, a school choir, take lessons, just sing.

I used to be very shy -- on stage. I started doing pageants when I was in high school. It really helped me so much with getting over the nervousness. I can speak in front of pretty much anyone on any occasion and I will pretty much play the piano in front of anyone now. I don't get nervous anymore. I just do it. It becomes second nature when you build you confidence.

SO GO SING BEAUTIFULLY AND WHEN YOU ARE ON AI WE WILL SUPPORT YOU. :)

Wow! Thanks so much for your advice! I have a feeling it will really help me out! Kall, thanks for saying you would support me on AI when I try out! That was really sweet of you and you boosted my confedince just by saying that! That was another thing I was worried about! I dont have a cute accent or anything spectacular. I dont know if anyone would even pay attention to me, then! I'm going to work really hard! Even though my parents say I should give up! I know, lots of support here! At least I know you guys are on my side! Thanks!

One thing to remember when friends tell you that you can sing: 80% of the time they are wrong because they are your friends. That's not to say that you can't sing, but more to explain that friends are biased. Those who don't know you are the ones who are better to say.

I suggest recording yourself and letting people listen to it. It will help you get over the stage fright by allowing others to listen to you first, without showing yourself actually doing it. It helped me with my djing. As for vocals, I'm still not one to perform in front of people lyrically, but that's more because I just don't want to rather than feel that I can't.

here's what you should know.....school does seem like a popularity contest and i know it seems to matter right now,but it does'nt!! once your through with school you,ll see how absurd all of that was!! and as far as being pretty.. are you going by what other people say? the POPULAR people? forget that junk!!! those people are posers!! their fake!! you are better than those people in every way. remember that when you get up on that stage to sing!!

When you're in front of an audience just pick out one person and focus on them. Pretend you're singing just for that one person and no one else in the whole place matters.

Also, don't forget to take deep breaths. Sing from your diaphragm not from your neck or the top part of your lungs.

yeah just sing! let loose and have fun! practice in front of your mirror and then your parents and friends and keep building up. when you get on stage, just imagine that you're singing to your mirror or that small group and just relax. connect with the song and just have fun! no one will judge you for it. and popularity doesnt mean anything! you might even gain new friends from the singing! and the singing could help you to get to know people. but most importantly, have fun! dont let nerves get you, thats happened to me before! i was nervous about flying on a plane and i put all my attention on being scared about that instead of getting excited and prepared for the trip. but after the plane ride, i realized there was nothing to be scared of! and when i was in 4th grade, i decided to be in the school's talent show. i didnt have very much experience and didnt have any experience on a big stage like that so my parents were startled that i wanted to sign up and, even though they didnt know if i was gonna go through with it, they still supported me. and yes, i was really nervous but once i got on stage i had so much fun and got a lot of congrats afterwards, which felt so cool! so just dont let your worrys get to you, everything will be fine!
and i will support you if you go on AI too! i bet you 1/2 of the contestants on AI had stage fright at some time in their lives too!
good luck! :)

Aw, sweety, don't worry about people at school. I'm a huge band geek and I love it. :) I play the saxophone and I love to sing, as well.

I had two big saxophone solos at my Christmas concert this past year. I was so nervoud I barely slept the night before, couldn't eat all day, felt like I was going to throw up, was shaking all day. Trust me, I get SO nervous.

Here's the thing, once I was through, it felt so AWESOME. It was one of the greatest nights ever! Just focus on that and know it REALLY pays off in the end.

By the way, I want to try out for Idol, too, if my mom will let me. Grr. lol. So we'll both be nervous!

That's excellent advice from Nikki C.
As far as being nervous is concerned, that's a GOOD thing. I have performed in many local community theatre productions. Before every show, I'm nervous to the point of being sick until I set foot on stage. Then, I'm existing in another world; the bubble of the show & my character.
On time, while driving to the theatre, I was just as calm as could be; not nervous at all. I thought, "Hmmmm, cool, maybe I'm over bring nervous about the show". Well, lemme tell ya, THAT WAS THE WORST PERFORMANCE I HAVE EVER GIVEN. I STUNK AND I KNEW IT.
So, being nervous is good. It keeps you focused.
After Cher did The National Anthem at a Super Bowl, she said, "I have NEVER been so nervous in my life". And.....her performance was phenomenal.

You don't have to be popular to be a star. Look at Eminem (although I dislike the rapper). He was the least liked while growing up, got picked on. He ended up becoming a major star.

Here are some tips for you to try!
+ start singing *all* the time. Take every opportunity to sing, when no one's home, head to the bathroom (because it creates a good echo!) and start singing as best as you can (with no music, just voice). Head to the living room and sing. Once you're comfortable with singing to yourself, you can move on to the next step.
+ start singing for family and friends. Invite all the family to the living room for a show. Do your best, and do this ehm, as often as possible. Maybe once a week will suffice.
+ Once you're comfortable with singing to yourself, family, and friends, audition for school musicals and also enter singing talent shows. It's a good idea to take choir because you will learn many things about pitch and notes. This will help you greatly, because it will help you sing while others are around with you on stage. Trust me, go for the school musicals. Audition for a part, preferably not the lead. Audition for everyone who has a bit of singing, this will get you some great experience and will help you in the long run, because you can also put it on your resume.
+ Try singing all kinds of music. Opera, country, pop. You will learn many things about your voice that you don't know!

Good luck.

I agree! Join a choir at church or praticipate in talent shows, so that you can build up your confidence. Good luck!

Take 2 aspirin and call me in the Morning.:)

Warm up your vocals prior to getting on stage.
Take a couple of relaxing deep breaths.

And Sing Your Heart out

As an after thought, we have several "PROS" here, including myself. If you have the resourses to record an MP3 of one song, we will give you an honest evaluation.

I judge young talent here on the Jersey shore during the summer months, so let me hear your vocals.

That is excellent advice. Also, when you move around the stage and lose focus of the one you picked out, when facing the general audience look at the tops of their heads. Become one with your own bubble on stage and own it.
A little bit of butterflies is a good thing. The very worst show I've ever done is one that I went into with complete confidence and no nerves at all. I STUNK and I knew it. It wasn't pretty. So yeah, let your nervousness push you. After a while and a few performances, you'll be fine.
