View Full Version : Buying Multiple Albums and Why You Shouldn't Do It

This is JMO but it's something to think about.

Tuesday Sept 19th Clay Aiken's album came out. I think y'all know me enough by now to know that I got this album lol. Due to school and life being busy I wasn't able to get over to Target until late that night, after 8 PM. Well we got there and lo and behold there are ZERO copies of A Thousand Different Ways left on the shelf. I searched around that whole music section and not ONE. I started to get very upset... I went up to the counter and asked the guy if they had any more.. at first he was like I don't think so, but he then went in the back and found me one.. thank God. I was about to cry, you can ask my roomate. I was like "Carrie I hope you're prepared to drive over to Best Buy right now". Luckily we didn't have to.

The point is, when people buy multiple copies of CDs, those of us that for whatever reason can't get into the store until late, may not get a copy at all. And honestly, is that really fair? Does that really help Kellie? IMO it only hurts her.. because I'm an extremely devoted fan of Clay.. I will drive to another store to get his CD.. but for how many other people did it stop right there when Target didn't have it? They might decide not to get the CD at all now, understand? Or they might get it two weeks after, when it could have counted for her first week sales had the CD been there then.

If you're getting them as Christmas presents you have about a two month window in which to buy the CDs, they don't all need to be bought on the same day. People just want to buy 6 at once because it counts for her first week sales. Understandable.. but can I offer a tip?

- Buy NO MORE THAN 2 the first day.
- WAIT a day or two.
- Go back to the store, see what's left, if there's still alot left, buy one or two more - she'll get her first week sales
- If there aren't any left, that means others bought them - awesome, she got her first week sales.
- get your extras for presents some other time, at another store, or off amazon

I just think that that is the most fair and it makes the most sense.. the most people get copies, the more her music is spread and her fanbase grows, and she gets the sales we want her to have.

This is just a suggestion, I know not everyone's gonna agree or follow it and that's fine. I just thought I'd put it out there, give people something to think about.

You made some really good points, Lauren. Thanks for sharing them! :)

I agree with the points, but the only reason really to do that is to let other people buy it, and that's a really good point and all, but no matter if "I" buy it or some other guy buys it there are still "So many Copes Sold" that it doesn't make any difference in that matter.

because a real devoted fan would go somewhere else to find it, and therefore she will get more sales.

like i said, nobody HAS to do anything that i suggested.. you can buy out the whole store if you want. i'm just pointing out possible consequences of multiple CD buying.

What she's trying to say is that Kellie has more than just 1 fan. If she were to sell 5,000 copies let's say...we would rather have them belong to 5,000 different fans rather then have them spilt up between 4,000 fans. That way, more people will discover her music. :)

i luv kellie

I agree. When some one buys like 8 the first day I find that very rude. They can expand that over a few days.

That all makes perfect sense to me!

right and that's my point here - let's think of the casual fans, because so often we act like they're not important when they're actually extremely important. How many people do think think are regular posters on this board? 50ish? 60ish? Maybe 100? Ok so.. add in really devoted fans that don't post on boards, don't post on THIS board, don't have internet access... I'd say we're at 1000 aprox. Kellie will sell alot more than 1000 copies of her CD, BECAUSE the bulk of her buyers will be casual fans, people who saw her on the show and liked her, people who like RHH, etc. Think about it: we do not make up the core percentage of CD buyers that will buy Kellie's album. It's simple math. There are FAR more casual fans than devoted hardcore fans of any artist, Clay Aiken and the rabid Claymates included. So to act like we're better than casual fans and that they're not important is to do a great disservice to Kellie, IMO.

but not all of Kellie's fans are devoted fans, she could have casual fans who see the album and think wow I'll get that. But if they don't see it they won't go somewhere else to buy it.

oh mama i opened a can of worms ;)

i just wanna make it clear that i'm not trying to chastise, yell at, or make anyone feel stupid... at the end of the day, y'all can do whatever you want because it's a free country and no one can stop you. I just wanted to give people something to think about.

LOL! Nice try Lauren! ;) It's too late to stop Kellie from overtaking
Clay in sales, lol j/k!! :p

haha i'd give the same advice to the claymates believe me.

ps clay sold about 200K this week... he beat everyone who came out the same week as him... Timberlake was number 1 for the week though, with Clay #2. i'm pretty happy with that. timberlake today is like michael jackson in the day, so.. Clay did VERY well.. i'm proud of him ;)

Good point. I'm planning to buy multiple CDs but only 1 or 2 the 1st day. I think Amazon will have tons available and if they happen to run out they should be able to get more quickly. iTunes is another option, no limit there. I already ordered 1 from Amazon so I can write a positive review on their website and I hope others will do the same (you just need to have purchased at least 1 of any item from Amazon to write reviews). At iTunes I think you just need to sign up for a free account.

this is kind of funny, but i appreciate the concern. i think that if i asked kellie, "can i go to kmart and buy a dozen of your albums?", she would say "awesome!". but don't worry, i'll spread my buying out between some stores and online.

Yeah, and also, if you buy too many cds at once(probably 5 or more) I've heard they don't count right. So if you're going to buy multiple. Buy them from different stores at different times, or at least at different registers.

Its just something to think about guys, its not a strict list of instructions. If you want to buy multiple copes, it may actually be more profitiable for both you and Kellie to buy them online

It is considerate to leave some for others, especially on the first day it comes out. I know I had to go to the store 7 times to buy a copy of Taylor Hick's single and I suspect it was from people buying multiple albums.

I would HATE for that to happen with Kellie's CD.

You had some good points, I wasn't planning on buying multiple, at least not the first day. I know how you feel for things like that. I've wanted something and drove to another city for it and guess what? It was sold out there, too. And just recently there's something I wanted reallllyyy bad, and man, people don't have sympathy, they'll just buy everything of it for a high price if necessary. ):

i think that as long as Kellie gets to number one, we'll be fine (or at least I will). How fast she gets there doesn't bother me. I'm going to buy 3 copies the first day. If i buy anymore, they will be for a present for someone else.

I'm buying 2 if i can afford it...i only have 2 of Carrie's CD. But like a week b4 Carrie's came out, i preordered the autographed copy of it, and i think the reason that sony ripped me off and it wasn't autographed was becvause i read on Carriefans that someone preordered 25 of the autographed copies...but anyway...i'm not sure if i'll be able to afford more than two, cuz Taylor Swift's CD comes out the week b4, then i gotta buy Katharine's CD 2 weeks later.......

Thats messed up, on both sony's part and the part of the person who bought 25, seriously how selfish can you be?

Your concern is well taken but if I know shoppers and they want 10 copies it will be first come first serve...That is just human nature to get it while it is there...But if they sell out fast then the re-order will be in Kellie's favor..
There are so many stores including Wal-Mart in this area that one can find a CD without driving far...But your points are well taken and we feel your compassion....

Stupid question - other than raising the sales, what are you going to do with six or seven copies of a cd?

geekilicious
10-01-2006, 03:10 PM
^ yeah that! lol.

some people are giving them as gifts to their family and friends or whatever.. i know for a fact none of my family or friends want a Kellie Pickler CD lol... instead i'll buy them a CD of an artist they want ;)

When Kat and Taylor's singles were released many fans patrolled the AI boards offering their iTunes singles as gifts to anyone with a email address who accepted. So that's one thing we can do with multiple copies. Taylor's fans even have an "operation wipeout" going to try to overtake Carrie's sales.

That is a much better idea than buying 50 cds for yourself
