'American Idol Rewind': Season 5 finalists tackle Queen and Great American Songbook

"Well, I love rock music and Queen's my favorite rock group, but I can't sing their music. You know, I sound like crap trying to do their stuff."

These are the words of season 5 "American Idol" finalist Kellie Pickler who you can see tackling "Bohemian Rhapsody" on an encore episode of "AI Rewind" this weekend.

In the clip below, watch as she does her best to eliminate the Southern twang from her performance, while fellow finalists Chris Daughtry and Taylor Hicks do their versions of the group's late great front man, Freddie Mercury.

Also this weekend, "Rewind" will look back at the Top 7 finalists as they take aim at the classic standards of the Great American Songbook with Rod Stewart by their side.

"American Idol Rewind"'s rehashing of season 5's Queen Week will air on TV Guide Network Friday (Feb. 19) at 9 p.m. ET, on Saturday (Feb. 20) at 3 and 6 p.m. and on Sunday (Feb. 21) at 10 p.m.

Their look back at The Great American Songbook episode will air Saturday and Sunday on FOX. Check your local listings.

Wow this is awesome! A new interview and much more of her Bohemian Rhapsody rehearsal we haven't seen before! I'm glad they interviewed Debra Byrd. I've always noticed that Kellie recorded some songs with twang and others without any twang, and wondered how and when she learned how. Although I love her accent, it's amazing that she can sing her more country songs with it and her more pop/rock songs without it. She could be a bigger pop/rock crossover success if the label would release BDOYL to pop radio. Oh well.

I think Kellie's BoRhap is one of the top performances ever on AI. As Simon said, "on paper" her knocking it out of the park like she did was so unexpected for the non-believers.

I agree and it's 1 of my all-time favorite performances. I remember on the Idol site everyone was concerned that she might not be able to pull BoRhap off because it's such a huge rock song, then she totally nailed it better than Constantine and wowed everyone. Even fans of other Idols were coming to her board and raving about it.

Kellie can be too self-deprecating sometimes. Her rendition of BR was fantastic.. best performance of the night.

She sings pop/rock better than many full time pop/rock artists.

^ She really does. It makes no sense that BDOYL was never marketed to pop audiences. It's really a shame. Have the head honchos at Sony/BNA ever bothered to even listen to that song? How could they have not realized that BDOYL had major crossover potential written all over it?

Most of the time I think Kellie's self-deprecating ways are a refreshing change from all the bragging and big egos in music. However, in this interview, I agree that she doesn't give herself enough credit.

Somewhere along the way she must have realized how well she did with this song. She should at least be able to say that she surprised herself. We can only hope that she says something like that somewhere in the rest of that episode of Rewind.
