FORT PIERCE — Former “American Idol” contestant and music star Kellie Pickler and her band brought their pop-country hits to the St. Lucie County Fair on Saturday night, proving why she’s growing into one of country’s leading female artists.

“I love her music,” proclaimed Vero Beach resident Darlene West. “I wasn’t going to miss this.”

    West wasn’t alone.

Hundreds of fairgoers packed the Adams Arena for a night of free music (besides the $10 fair entrance fee) from a star who has toured with acts such as Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts and Brad Paisley.

“We were surprised that the fair was able to bring in such a big singer,” said Fort Pierce resident Kim Thomas, as she waited for Pickler to hit the stage. “It’s really small town Florida — so it’s great.”

As the arena darkened and the stage lights turned on, it was nothing but whistles, claps and chants for Pickler as she walked out singing “Little House on the Highway” from her popular 2012 album 100 Proof.

With fans singing along and waving from seats, in which Pickler waved back, audience members of all ages were giddy with excitement.

“How are you doing?” Picker asked the crowd. “Thank you so much for coming out tonight.”

Going on to dedicate her hit “Tough” to the tough country chicks in the house as fans gathered in-front of the stage, just feet away from Pickler, taking pictures with their cellphones.

“I don’t mind coming to the fair listening to this great music,” joked Port St. Lucie resident Lisa Davis as she stood swaying to the music. “She’s really good and the best part, she’s supporting causes while she’s here.”

Which she did, dedicating the concert to the Treasure Coast chapter of Pink Tie Friends, a nonprofit organization that raises money to help breast cancer patients in Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties.

An avid supporter of breast cancer awareness, last fall, Pickler shaved off her blonde locks in support of a friend who was diagnosed at age 36 with the disease.

“I think it’s great that she shaved her head,” said fan Kayla Thomas, an Indian River State College student. “It’s nice that she did something like that for a friend.”

With Pickler’s unbounded energy, superb vocals and beauty, local Tim Janson said she’s the complete package and he’s glad she made her way to Fort Pierce.

“Between her songs, her voice, good looks and the causes she supports — she’s got it all,” Janson said. “ ... I think everyone here would agree.”

By the amount of cheering the singer received, it seemed Janson was dead on with his assumption.
