Taylor Swift dazzles at Staples Center

Register staff writer Lindsey Baguio contributed this review of Taylor Swift’s concert Thursday night at Staples Center:

Taylor Swift loves L.A. and from the reaction of the thousands of fans inside the Staples Center it was apparent they were in love with Swift.

“Los Angeles I love you like I love sparkly dresses and on-stage costume changes,” Swift professed after her first song. “I love you like I love burning ex-boyfriends’ pictures. I love you like I love telling love stories.”

All the girls went crazy with screams and rightly so – it’s just about every teenage girl’s dream to dance around in a wardrobe of sparkly dresses and get public revenge on every boy who has done her wrong.

Swift has been living that dream as she continues on the second year of her Fearless tour, spreading a message of positivity and validating every girl’s high school experience of disappointment, heartbreak, and search for social acceptance.

Befittingly, she began the night with “You Belong With Me” dressed in a band uniform including a hat that she threw off mid-way through the song to let out her golden ringlets – which she used more than her voice to punctuate songs – and tore off her uniform to reveal the first of many dresses of the night that was embellished with sequins, fringe, and beads.

Her ability to succinctly express the traumas and triumphs of high school resounded with both schoolgirls and mothers who were singing along with Swift’s sold-out Thursday night performance. It was the first of a two-show stint at the downtown Los Angeles venue.

Swift didn’t stray far from the vocal arrangements of her recorded songs with the exception of her performance of “I’m Not Sorry.” She mixed in a sample of Justin Timberlake’s “What Goes Around Comes Around.” This may have been her most adult performance of the night that had a sense of rawness and featured some quite extensive “hairography.” She worked those golden tresses and writhed from behind a piano during a musical interlude.

Swift’s vocal delivery in a live setting made it apparent that her range isn’t as impressive as her 20-something peers like Carrie Underwood or opening act Kellie Pickler, who belted a seven-song set. But what Swift lacked in range can easily be overlooked by the warmth, confidence, and a genuine sense of gratitude that she exudes while on stage. It had the crowd gushing about her performance all the way to the parking lot.

The highlight for dozens of concert-goers was some brief one-on-one time typically reserved for meet-and-greets when Swift appeared at a mid-level tier of seats to sing “Hey Stephen” kicking-off a three song acoustic set. She gave hugs, autographs, and high fives with anyone who could squeeze their way to the aisle – this included grown men who were left just as wide-eyed as the teen girls – while she made her way to a small stage set at the back of the floor
A fun surprise was her cover of Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” when lo-and-behold it was Katy Perry herself who appeared on stage for the assist as the two engaged in an all out dance-fest.

Swift’s musical journey through the angst of high school ended with “Should’ve Said No” the song included a drumming battle between Swift and one of her backup singers and ended with Swift soaked in a waterfall.

With Swift now 20, one can’t help but wonder what’s next for the country-pop star, since she’s past feelings of high school angst and awkwardness. In Vogue’s May issue she announced a new album is scheduled for release in the fall.

With her lyrical skills, raw talent, girl-next-door persona, and beauty apparent at all angles she has an opportunity to reach a larger audience exploring more mature topics of adult relationships.

Since Kellie is in the minds of many, including mine, a superior vocalist to Taylor, do you think she could be enjoying close to the same level of success as Carrie and Taylor if she had been receiving the same degree of promotion as the other two?

Well since Kellie is a great vocalist and songwriter who makes great albums there's no doubt her sales would be much greater with more promo. The more promo and airplay, the higher her sales go. We've seen that every time promo increased a little over the past 3-4 years (mostly her singles moving up the chart or TV performances). Carrie and Taylor have enjoyed the benefits of 10 or more times more promo and airplay than Kellie so naturally their sales are that much higher. There's a huge difference between 1+ million spins from top 5/#1 on country and pop radio and top 15 only on country radio

It's pretty ridiculous that Elliott has more spins than Kellie as he only had 1 or 2 singles that charted well.

Kellie has really had the cards stacked against her with the male bias nonsense coupled with virtually non-existent promo.
